Stupid Things Mitt Romney Has Said
Another Disclosure
For those of you who haven't seen my Hub on the stupid things that Rick Santorum has said, I feel that it is my duty to disclose my political leanings prior to making any negative statements about things that politicians have said.
I am independent, but I generally lean towards liberal. I am very liberal when it comes to social issues, but more moderate in regards to fiscal policy.
That being said, below is a list of the stupid (and sometimes scary) things that Mitt Romney has said during the course of his political career (and by political career I mean all the time he has spend running for president)
Stupid Things Mitt Says
"It's not the language I would have used" - This doesn't sound stupid at first glance...but let us look at the context here. When asked by reporters what he thought about Rush Limbaugh's offensive comments about the college student who spoke on Capital Hill about birth control, this is all he said. He did not say that Rush shouldn't have called her a slut, or even that Rush is just an overbearing entertainer. No, all he said was that he wouldn't have used the same language. Rush was right, but maybe he was too mean about it.
"I'm not concerned about the very poor, there is a safety net there" - Yes, I'm sure the very poor are thankful for their gang-ridden section 8 housing and the horrible schools in their neighborhoods. That little safety net is doing a lot to keep the streets safer for their children, to get healthy foods into those neighborhoods, and to ensure that the poor stay poor. In addition, he says he isn't worried about it, but most Republicans want to cut these safety net programs, blaming them for all of the nation's budget problems when only about 2% of the total budget goes to these programs.
"I like being able to fire people" - Really? Who is this heartless? Firing people is awful. Obviously it has to be done, being fired is part of life, and always a risk when working for someone else. But who really enjoys it? Even if your employee isn't performing correctly, you know that you are hurting him and his family by firing him. Who gets off on that?
"I have some friends who are NASCAR team owners" - Really? He was trying to express that he was in touch with the Southerners who are huge fans of NASCAR. How many Southern Nascar fans have friends who are team owners? Epic Fail. Once again Romney proves the opposite.
"Planned Parenthood, we're going to get rid of that" - Yes, he was talking about balancing the budget, and this is something we desperately need. But nonchalantly casting aside an organization that helps millions of women is unacceptable. Contrary to popular belief, planned parenthood is not just an abortion clinic. It provides pre-natal care to women who wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise. Many Planned Parenthood locations offer classes to young parents. It provides STD tests and breast cancer screenings. Overall, it is a complete woman's health center for those that can't afford to go anyplace else. Millions of people use Planned Parenthood, but I guess if you have the amount of money Mitt Romney's family has, you don't have to worry about it.
"Ann Drives a couple of Cadillacs" - A couple of Cadillacs? Do I even need to say any more about this?
"The answer is self-deportation, which is people decide they can do better by going home" - Mitt Romney is living in a fantasy world with this one. There is a chance that a small small percentage of illegal immigrants will "self deport". It is highly doubtful that any significant number will. This is a horrible plan. It will never work. It will never happen. He needs to face the issue and come up with a fair and equitable compromise rather than making up fairy tale plans that will never work. That is not very presidential.
"I'll bet you $10,000" - If he had said a million dollars, people would probably have realized that it was a facetious bet (as he claimed). But a multi-millionaire betting 10 grand is similar to the average person betting 100 bucks. He can claim he wasn't serous all he wants, but this was chump change to him, and the general consensus is - he was serious.
And last...Everyone's favorite:
"Corporations are People" - This is the scariest one. The SCOTUS even agreed with him on this. This mindset is helping to destroy America
Mitt Romney is Funny, Scary, and out of Touch
Mitt Romney is not a scary man. Most of these stupid things that he says are based more on his own stupidity than on his core convictions (does he even have any of those?). Most people say stupid things that they don't mean, but most of them aren't running for president. Also, it does seem that Mr. Romney says something stupid more often than not whenever he opens his mouth.
A few of the quotes are scary though. Corporations are People. It's not the language I would have used. These things show his heart. They show how he really feels. I don't want a president who thinks a corporation should have the same rights as a living breathing person. I don't want a president who thinks I'm a slut because I have used birth control pills.
Mitt Romney is out of touch with most Americans. He can't even begin to fathom the hardships of people living on minimum wage, or even of people making less than $100,000 per year. He has never experienced it. This doesn't make him a bad person, but it might make him a bad president.
